Dead Cards

How to Use the Poker Odds Calculator

1. Select players — Click any of the 9 seats around the table, then pick two hole cards for each player using the card picker at the top. The first two seats (top-left and top-right) auto-fill in sequence — just click cards and they'll be assigned. To add more opponents, click any empty seat around the table.

2. Add community cards — Click the board card slots in the center of the table to add flop, turn, and river cards. After filling both hero seats, the picker automatically targets the flop. Leave the board empty for preflop equity calculations.

3. Add dead cards — Click any slot in the Dead Cards section below the table to mark cards that are out of play. You can add up to 10 dead cards. This is useful in live poker when you've seen exposed or folded cards — it narrows the remaining deck for more precise equity.

4. Read the results — Win and tie percentages appear below each player's cards and update automatically. Color coding helps you read results at a glance: green means the favorite (50%), red means the underdog (20%), and yellow is in between. Preflop heads-up results are instant; all other scenarios calculate in milliseconds.

5. Start over — Hit the "New Hand" button to clear everything and start a fresh scenario. Click any filled card to remove just that card and re-deal.

About This Calculator

This poker hand calculator uses the same engine that powers the PokerLog mobile app. It combines three calculation methods for optimal speed and accuracy:

  • Preflop lookup table — Instant results for 2-player preflop scenarios. The table contains 28,000+ precomputed matchups built from over 10 million simulations per hand combination, giving you essentially exact equity with zero wait time.
  • Exhaustive enumeration — 100% mathematically exact results for flop and turn boards. The engine evaluates every possible remaining card combination to determine the true equity down to the last decimal point.
  • Monte Carlo simulation — High-accuracy estimates for multi-player preflop scenarios (3-9 players). The engine runs 4,000-10,000 random simulations depending on player count, producing results typically within 0.5% of the true value.

Common Preflop Matchups

Understanding common preflop equity matchups is fundamental to winning poker. Here are the scenarios you'll encounter most often:

  • Overpair vs underpair (AA vs KK) — roughly 82% vs 18%. Even the second-best starting hand is a massive underdog against Aces.
  • Pair vs two overcards (QQ vs AK suited) — about 54% vs 46%. Often called a "coin flip," though the pair has a slight edge.
  • Dominated hand (AK vs AQ) — roughly 74% vs 26%. Sharing a card with a worse kicker is a tough spot.
  • Small pair vs overcards (77 vs AK offsuit) — about 55% vs 45%. The pair is a slight favorite but it's close.
  • Suited connectors vs overcards (87 vs AK offsuit) — roughly 38% vs 62%. Suited connectors have more ways to make straights and flushes but start behind.

Try these matchups in the calculator above to see exact numbers and build your preflop intuition.

Understanding Poker Equity

Equity is the cornerstone of every profitable poker decision. At its simplest, equity tells you what percentage of the pot "belongs" to you based on your chances of winning. If you have 60% equity in a $100 pot, your expected share is $60.

This matters because profitable poker comes down to one rule: put money in when your equity exceeds your pot share. If you're one of two players and you have 60% equity, any bet you call is profitable in the long run. Our calculator makes it easy to study these situations and develop an intuitive feel for where you stand in any hand.

Equity shifts dramatically as community cards are dealt. Pocket Kings might have 82% equity preflop against Ace-Queen, but if an Ace hits the flop, that equity can drop below 10%. Using the calculator to explore how board textures change equity is one of the fastest ways to improve your postflop play.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the poker hand calculator work?

Our calculator uses a hybrid engine that combines three methods for speed and accuracy. For 2-player preflop matchups, it uses an instant lookup table with 28,000+ precomputed results — no waiting at all. When community cards are on the board (flop or turn), it uses exhaustive enumeration, evaluating every possible remaining card combination for 100% exact results. For multi-player preflop scenarios (3-9 players), it runs Monte Carlo simulations with thousands of iterations to produce high-accuracy estimates in under a second.

How accurate is this poker odds calculator?

Flop, turn, and river calculations are 100% mathematically exact — the engine checks every possible outcome, leaving no room for error. Preflop heads-up results come from a precomputed table built from over 10 million simulations per matchup, so they're effectively exact as well. Multi-player preflop scenarios use Monte Carlo simulation with 4,000-10,000 iterations depending on player count, producing results that are typically within 0.5% of the true value. Overall, this is one of the most accurate free poker calculators available.

Can I use dead cards in the calculation?

Yes. You can mark up to 10 dead cards — cards you know are out of play. This is common in live poker when you see another player fold face-up or when a card is accidentally exposed. Adding dead cards narrows the remaining deck and makes the equity calculation more precise. Simply click any of the dead card slots below the table, then select cards from the picker. Click a filled dead card to remove it.

What is poker equity?

Poker equity is the percentage chance your hand has of winning the pot at any given point. It accounts for all possible remaining community cards that could be dealt. For example, pocket Aces (AA) have roughly 85% equity against a random hand preflop, but that drops to around 65% against two random opponents. Equity is the foundation of profitable poker — if your equity exceeds your share of the pot, calling or raising is mathematically correct. This calculator shows both win percentage and tie percentage for complete equity analysis.

How many players can I calculate odds for?

You can calculate odds for 2 to 9 players simultaneously, covering every seat at a standard poker table. Each player needs exactly two hole cards. The calculator also handles any board state: no community cards (preflop), three cards (flop), four cards (turn), or all five (river). Combined with up to 10 dead cards, this gives you full flexibility to model virtually any Texas Hold'em scenario you'll encounter at the table.

What are some common preflop matchups to know?

Some key matchups every poker player should understand: AA vs KK is roughly 82% vs 18% — even the second-best hand is a huge underdog. AK suited vs QQ is close to a coin flip at about 46% vs 54%. A pair versus two overcards (like 77 vs AK) is typically around 55% vs 45%. And a dominated hand like AK vs AQ has roughly 74% vs 26% equity. Use this calculator to explore any matchup you're curious about — understanding these numbers is essential for making profitable decisions.

Is this poker calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free with no limitations. There's no sign-up required, no ads, and no premium tier that locks features behind a paywall. You get the same equity engine that powers the PokerLog mobile app. Use it as many times as you want for any scenario — preflop, flop, turn, or river with up to 9 players and 10 dead cards.
