Michigan has a dual structure. Three commercial casinos in Detroit — MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino Hotel, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown — were authorized by Detroit voters' approval of Proposal E in 1996, with the first temporary casinos opening in 1999 and permanent properties built out by 2007. The three Detroit casinos are the only commercial casinos in Michigan and form the state's urban-poker hub. MGM Grand Detroit typically runs the highest-volume room of the three.
Outside Detroit, Michigan's poker scene is overwhelmingly tribal. Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mount Pleasant (Saginaw Chippewa) anchors central Michigan and is a regular Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) stop. FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek (Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi) and Gun Lake Casino in Wayland round out the southwestern tribal cluster. Smaller charity poker rooms operating under Michigan's charity-game framework (Burton Eagles, Legends Metamora, the Saginaw Poker Room, others) provide additional local cash-game options across the state.
Michigan legalized online gambling — including online poker — in December 2019 via the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, with regulated sites going live in January 2021. WSOP MI, BetMGM Poker MI, and PokerStars MI all operate. In May 2022, Michigan became the fourth state to join the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), pooling player liquidity with Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware for shared online tournaments. West Virginia (2023) and Pennsylvania (April 2025) have since joined.
Tournament traffic concentrates around the MGM Grand Detroit Poker Series in Detroit and MSPT stops at Soaring Eagle. Plan a multi-room Detroit or central-Michigan trip with the bankroll calculator.
