New Jersey legalized casino gambling in 1976 via voter approval of the Casino Control Act, with the first Atlantic City casino opening in 1978. Atlantic City was the original East Coast destination market and remains the only commercial-casino city in the state — every live-poker room in New Jersey sits along the AC boardwalk or marina district.
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa has been the dominant poker venue since opening in 2003. Its room is the largest in New Jersey by table count, and the Borgata Poker Open (Spring, Summer, and Fall editions) plus the WSOP Circuit Borgata stop anchor the East Coast tournament calendar outside Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Harrah's Atlantic City and Tropicana Atlantic City are the other two AC rooms with active live poker.
The Atlantic City poker market has consolidated since the 2014-2016 casino closure wave (Showboat, Trump Plaza, Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic Club). Hard Rock Atlantic City — built inside the former Taj Mahal — chose not to operate a dedicated poker room when it reopened, narrowing the AC live-poker footprint to the Borgata-Harrah's-Tropicana cluster. Borgata's tournament volume has held steady through the contraction.
New Jersey was the first US state to legalize online poker (2013), regulated by the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement. NJ later joined the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, sharing player liquidity with Nevada and Delaware, then Michigan (2022), West Virginia (2023), and Pennsylvania (April 2025). WSOP NJ runs the largest online tournament series in the legal US market.
